Day 96: A Reminder of God's Provision and Ownership
As we navigate through life, it’s easy to become consumed with the things we own. Our possessions, wealth, and achievements can start to feel like products of our hard work, intelligence, and efforts. However, the Bible reminds us that all we have comes from God. There is nothing in this world that we possess that is not ultimately a gift from the Creator.
Biblical Principle: Absolute Truth from God’s Word
In Deuteronomy 8:11-20, we are given a warning that resonates across generations. It speaks to the tendency of our hearts to forget the true source of our blessings. When life is going well—when we’ve eaten and are full, when we’ve built good homes, and when our wealth and possessions have multiplied—it’s easy to begin thinking that all of this is the result of our power and might.
Deuteronomy 8:17 puts it plainly: “And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.” But here is the correction—“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth.” The very ability to acquire anything we possess is granted by God.
This principle isn’t limited to wealth alone. Whether it’s our health, relationships, talents, or opportunities, everything we have comes from God. His provision is abundant, and we must remember Him in all things. This warning is necessary because of the danger of thinking we are self-sufficient. When we forget God’s role, we risk walking away from Him and allowing other distractions—material wealth, success, or the pursuit of power—to take His place in our hearts.
God’s Word calls us to remember Him in the good times as much as in the bad. He is the One who has seen us through trials, provided in times of need, and blessed us beyond measure. To forget Him is to risk our ruin, as it is a rejection of the source of all blessings.
Practical Application: Understanding Our Possessions
Now, let’s make this truth practical: What do you have that you think is yours? It could be anything—a house, a car, a job, or even a family. Perhaps you’ve worked hard for these things, and in many ways, you have. But the more profound truth is that these are God-given gifts, and He has allowed you to use them for a time. In a way, everything we possess is on loan from God, who gives us the responsibility to steward it well.
James 1:17 reminds us that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” This isn’t just about physical gifts; it extends to every blessing in our lives, from our talents to our opportunities. God’s gifts are perfect, and they come from the Father of lights, who is unchanging and faithful.
When we recognize that everything we have is from God, our perspective shifts. We begin to see our possessions, talents, and opportunities not as things we own but as tools that God has entrusted us with. Our wealth, homes, and abilities are all resources we can use to serve Him. The question then becomes: How are we using what God has given us to bring glory to Him?
The Call to Obedience
The ultimate response to understanding that everything we have belongs to God is obedience. Deuteronomy 8:19-20 warns that if we forget God, we will suffer the consequences, just as those who turned away from Him in the past did. But on the flip side, when we recognize God’s ownership and provision, our natural response should be to honor Him through obedience.
When we obey God, we align our lives with His will, acknowledge His sovereignty over all things, and find joy and fulfillment in using His gifts for His glory. After all, God’s desire is not just for us to accumulate wealth or possessions for our enjoyment but to use them to serve others and His kingdom.
Conclusion: A Humble Perspective
In a world where self-sufficiency and individualism are highly valued, the reminder from Deuteronomy and James is humbling. Everything we have is a gift, a provision from God. We are merely stewards entrusted with the responsibility to use what He has given us wisely.
So, the next time you find yourself basking in the blessings of life—whether in your career, your family, or your possessions—remember that they are all from God. It is He who gives you power to get wealth, and it is He who sustains you. In this truth, let’s strive to live in obedience, honoring God with all we have and recognizing Him as the true source of every good gift.
